Anyone can reinvent themselves and start over.
Case in point: Monica Lewinsky.
She was once branded the president's mistress and a homewrecker.
Now, she's a highly paid speaker with an international platform.
Forbes recently featured her as a speaker.
Monica Lewinsky Speaks: 'It's My Mission to End Cyberbullying" - Forbes.com
Lewinsky says she wants to 'help other victims' and I give her credit for finding that new mission.
If I gave one piece of advice to Lewinsky, I would advise her to stop painting herself as a victim.
She knew her lover was a high-profile President of the United States.
She knew he was married with a daughter.
She knew nothing is kept secret with affairs forever.
She knew all of that and she didn't care.
Many women who date married men with children and families don't care so she's not alone there. She cites her young age repeatedly. Sorry, but I don't believe any mistress who dates a married man can use age as an excuse, even if she's 22-years-old. Erase the fact that he was the president when this affair occurred. I wonder if it were Lewinsky's husband or father who had an affair with a younger woman, what would she think of the other woman?
Like other high-profile mistresses before her, most mistresses in this day and age get a pass for believing their married lovers. But few of those relationships have lasting power.
Where she takes this newfound speaking career is unknown but she does have the power to do some good now if she stops using the word "victim" to describe herself. Clearly she wants her 15 minutes of fame back or at the very least, extended to 30 minutes. Somehow I doubt that Hillary Clinton or Chelsea Clinton will be meeting with Lewinsky any time soon.
