Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte - Still Love It!

If you love the seasonal Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte, you know there's already drama circulating this year about what's in the drink.

FoodBabe.com published a controversial article entitled "You'll Never Guess What's in a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte (Hint: You Won't Be Happy)."

Then, Snopes.com countered FoodBabe with an article entitled "Pumpkin Perfidy."

USAToday.com published an article today "One thing NOT in Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Latte: pumpkin."

Here's the thing.  Starbucks never said there was real pumpkin in the pumpkin spice latte.  Everyone who was drinking the PSL probably knew that it was some sort of syrup because you can watch the barista pump from a syrup bottle in making the PSL.

I've tried different ways of making the pumpkin spice latte at home to save money and calories.  They never taste like the PSL at Starbucks.

Calorie count:
Starbucks tall PSL:  260 calories
Starbucks grande PSL:  330 calories

Those calorie counts equal nearly a full meal. Drinking all of your calories at every meal is never smart.

So, here's what I've decided this season.  Since Starbucks insisted on raising the price of a tall PSL to $4.15 and the price of a grande PSL to $4.75, the PSL is off my list as a regular drink due to the cost. Once a month until the season ends in January or February, I'll have the treat of one.

It won't be every day, it won't be every week, but once a month.  That won't break the bank.  That also won't break the calorie count of my daily calories on MyFitnessPal.com.

If you decide to make a PSL at home, I find the best way to do it now is to put the pumpkin spice in with your coffee grounds and brew them together, then top with a tablespoon of whipped cream. Adding real pumpkin to coffee makes it a mess and lumpy, so it hasn't worked for me.  I have tried every alternative I've ever found... it's just not the same.  You may find an alternative you love, so try whatever you find.

Either way, enjoy your coffee, count your calories on MyFitnessPal.com, and be more aware of healthy eating and drinking!  Cheers!

  1. Interesting. I had no idea! But one a month should be a good idea. I agree!
