I love Fiesta dinner plates. I grew up with ONE light green Fiesta dinner plate. We didn't have a set of the green plates, we only had one. It seemed to be a special plate in our family. I never overate when I had dinner on that plate. My mother recently informed me that the green Fiesta dinner plate broke and she threw it away. She thinks that plate was more than 60 years old. Fiesta dinner plates last a long time.
So, what color plate helps you eat less food?
For me, I like to eat from white plates. But there are different studies showing different results.
One study from 2011 says eat from blue plates or white plates if you want to lose weight.
Another study says you should eat from red plates to be more mindful of what you're eating.
The list goes on. One site says black plates, another says eat from dark blue plates and yet another one says eat from any plate, just don't eat from a bag or a box! I would add to that - don't eat from a carton either. Eating directly from an ice cream carton can lead to a serious binge as you even out the ice cream.
My simple theory about plating is two-fold:
1. Eat from a plate that is smaller than a big dinner plate so you control your portions.
2. Don't eat from a chipped plate. Throw out the old chipped plates and invest in nice, decent plates. Make your meal look pleasurable, not depressing. Depressing feelings could lead to overeating or binging for no reason.
That's it. Ultimately, the color of the plate won't control your diet and it won't define your weight loss or weight gain. Whatever you're eating should be wonderful with colorful food choices so every bite is enjoyable. Anything short of thoughtful, enjoyable eating can lead to overeating.
