This morning, I went swimming at my gym and I noticed the woman in the next lane doing the most interesting thing. She had lined up pieces of plastic fruit at the end of the lane. When she swam a full lap, she moved one piece of fruit to a separate pile. Then, she repeated the process over and over again. After she had six pieces of fruit on one pile, she exited the swimming pool and headed for the hot tub.
As she was leaving, I asked her about her process. She explained that her grand-nephew had asked her how many laps she was swimming. She said, "I swim about three or four laps, maybe six, I don't know." It was then she realized that she loses track of the number of laps she swims. So, she went shopping to a store where everything costs $1.50 and she bought two bags of plastic fruit. Now, she knows exactly how many laps she finishes and she doesn't short change her workout.
This is a genius idea! She created her own tracking system and accountability. She feels better about her workouts because she is clearly making progress and swimming more by logging her laps rather than guessing.
Another woman told me she and her husband had become vegans for the month and it was going well. She missed eggs, but she was craving more fruit. She also said swimming made her feel refreshed, exercised and clean. She was quite fit and a young mom.
Everyone needs to find out what works for them. Make the time to exercise. It helps your mind and your body. Life is not easy so you might as well be as strong as possible for those days when challenges try to knock you down. Be strong. Be fit. And be ready!
