I love weight loss studies. Give me a thousand people to study for a short period of time and I can give you an absolute way to lose weight. Wooo-hoooo!
So, let's get down to the latest studies.
First Study: You CAN train your brain to like healthy foods: Researchers reveal diet that can kick junk food addiction
Basically, it was a six-month study of 13 overweight people. THIRTEEN! 13. Lucky 13. This study is basically results in a hypothesis and says so. Please.
Of course, you can re-train your brain to eat healthy by not buying the processed foods you crave and then overeat. Be smart in your buying habits, don't make cakes and cookies, and eat simple proteins, fruits and veggies every day. It's not that hard. The emotional part of it is the most challenging thing to deal with in losing weight.
Read the details of the study, not only the headline.
Second Study: A Call for a Low-Carb Diet That Embraces Fat
This study included 150 men and women for one year. Some of them followed diets that limited the amount of carbs or fat they could eat, but it didn't limit calories.
This is a longer study and studied more people. By the end of the year, subjects amongst the low-carb eaters lost 8 pounds more than the other people amongst the low-fat eaters.
If you are eating less carbs in the form of potatoes, pasta, cereals, breads, chips, and your favorite processed foods, how can you not lose weight? I don't know anyone who lives primarily on simple proteins, fruits and vegetables who has a weight problem. But people who love carbs and free bread at restaurants, show continued weight gain and battles. I also agree that you need some fat in your diet. I think of toddlers as they're growing. Their brain needs some fat to grow. Why wouldn't adults need some fat in their diets to keep their brain and other organs in better working condition?
It's really easy to track on My Fitness Pal. I track my food regularly.
My sister, who was diagnosed only months ago with Diabetes 2 tracks her calories, carbs, fat, protein, sodium and sugars on My Fitness Pal, too. She's lost nearly 50 pounds already and she doesn't belong to some fancy gym. She's just figured out what her intake in each category should be each day and she tracks her food. She makes healthier food choices and she makes weight loss look so easy. She's also done some emotional work on dealing with the naysayers and saboteurs in her life. We all have them, but we have some homework to do to deal with it and move forward.
I just think too many of us are confused by all of the noise of the latest study results for weight loss. It confuses us and we do nothing to really change. Next time you read a study, look at the details. How many people were in the study and how long did it last?
Try to ignore the studies, make healthier food purchases and track your food today for healthier living! Weight loss is possible!
