Selfies in the Doctor's Office - It Happens Often!

Source: Joan Rivers' doctor took selfie, began biopsy before her cardiac arrest

What I'm about to say may shock you... but it's 100% true.

Selfies in the Doctor's Office happen often...even by the doctor.

My son had oral surgery to remove his four wisdom teeth a few months ago.

It was very stressful because surgery and anesthesia always come with concern.  Anything can happen, right?

My son was under a local anesthesia for the removal of his wisdom teeth, but he has no memory of the oral surgery.

After the surgery was complete, I was brought back to the recovery room where my son was waking up.  As he's in recovery but in and out of consciousness, trying to wake up, my son hands me his cell phone and points me to pictures on his cell phone.  I turn on his phone and look at the pictures on his cell phone.

To my shock, there were several selfies on his cell phone taken by the doctor and nurse, with my partially sedated son half-smiling and looking delirious in the dental chair in the background.  I was shocked.  Selfies in the surgical room?  And several selfies?  I was paying the bill and I didn't give anyone permission to take selfies in the surgical suite.  But my son is over 18 and he was alive and fine... so I didn't complain.  I let it go.  It apparently happens a lot.  I asked more questions about the selfies.  Someone on staff told me that teenagers ask for the selfies a lot so they take selfies regularly.  When my son sobered up and looked at the photos, he was even shocked at how many selfies were taken.  My son, of course, sent those selfies to a friend.  He still has those selfies on his cell phone.

We talked to another one of my son's friends who ALSO had selfies on his phone from the same doctor and the same wisdom tooth surgery.  Those selfies were also taken in the surgical suite by the staff as well.

The surgeries went very well with this doctor and while I'm grateful everything went well, I'm not so happy that selfies were taken while my son was under anesthesia.  Focus, people, focus.  You're the adults - if teenagers are asking for selfies just say no.

A adult friend of mine is undergoing open heart surgery.  He asked his surgeon to take a selfie of him during the surgery, when his heart is stopped momentarily, and put on a bypass machine.  The doctor said, "Absolutely not.  No."  I told my friend he has a excellent doctor and he's in good hands.

Maybe Joan Rivers' death will stop all of the selfies when ANY medical procedure is taking place, especially when any kind of anesthesia is involved.  Do doctors and nurses need to be distracted when a surgery is taking place?

Joan Rivers is changing the lay of the land for all future surgical procedures.  Sad that this change had to happen this way with Joan Rivers' death... but her message is loud and clear:  No Selfies During Any Medical Procedure.  And maybe that important change is part of Joan Rivers' legacy.
