Your weight matters. If you're obese, it matters in every part of your life including in the workplace. We all know that. People bring in cakes and candies and then they make fun of the fat person who eat a slice of cake. People are cruel in the workforce, let's not fool ourselves. They judge each other and in certain environments it can be worse than judgments in cliques in high school.
But look at what the CDC has done. They've taken that slight one step further.

Here is the CDC "Obesity Calculator" being offered to businesses.
LEAN Works: Obesity Cost Calculator - CDC
On that CDC page, they offer a free Worksheet to businesses that basically implies that they could save money by either not hiring anyone who is obese or clean house of obese employees.
This is shocking and appalling.
Why doesn't the CDC offer ways for businesses to help promote good health in the workplace instead? Why don't they offer a free calculator for adding a place where people can work out over their lunch hour or how the business could start a walking group for free? Why don't they show businesses that they can bring in a nutritionist to talk about making healthier food choices.
Instead, this whole CDC approach will put people out of work reminding businesses never to hire anyone who is overweight, obese or morbidly obese. In my opinion, this is discrimination.
I know a woman who was hired by a corporation when she was thin. Over the years, she rose the ladder while she was thin. Then, she gained weight and became obese. She realized her days were numbered so she went to Weight Watchers and lost 20 pounds. It wasn't enough weight and it wasn't fast enough. She was offered an early retirement and replaced by a younger, very thin woman.
Is this the scenario the CDC wants? They want to force obese folks out of the workforce?
People need help to lose weight. Maybe the CDC should do something more productive than reminding businesses the costs of employee obesity and show them how to help their employees instead of focusing only on the costs.
