While in Hawaii, I fell in love with... Spam. That's right, Spam. I don't think I had ever eaten or even tasted Spam in my life before this visit. But Spam is inexpensive and it's a beloved treat in Hawaii.
As I understand it, the use of Spam in Hawaii dates back to World War II. Spam was canned meat that had a long shelf life for the GIs. After the war was over, there were tons of leftover cans of Spam and it was given to the Hawaiian people. They cooked it and created little delicacies out of the Spam.
For $2 and change, you can get a delicious spam meal in Hawaii. To the left are pictures of rice balls with a slice of Spam, a slice of egg and either bacon or cucumber. They were delicious and filling!
We got our Spam Musabi at The Musabi Cafe in Honolulu. Talk about an inexpensive meal for three!
There are lots of recipes and video how-to's online for making Spam Musabi. Enjoy!
